Borough of Telford and Wrekin - Dark Room Solution
The Borough of Telford & Wrekin had a requirement to automate their computer room operations and as a result implemented Merlin, a product from PTC Software Solutions. Merlin is a cross platform Job Scheduling System that enables Data Centres to automate the running of Production Job Schedules.
elexa Consultants was chosen to provide various Shell scripts, which integrated Merlin with the Financial Accounts System of the Council. These scripts perform tasks which include:
Monitoring the task queue for long running and failed tasks
Starting and stopping executors
Submitting and monitoring the overnight batch schedules
The Merlin software calls and processes the scripts in a pre-defined order. Each script produces a series of return codes and messages. If any script identifies a problem that requires human intervention, Merlin will pause the batch schedule and send an appropriate text message to one, or a number of, mobile phones, alerting the out of hours support team. Should a less serious problem be identified, Merlin produces an email that is then sent to a support email address and allows the batch schedule to continue.
